Founded in 1917, the Woman’s Afternoon Music Club of Sumter, South Carolina has been a vibrant part of the city’s cultural fabric for more than a century. Just three years after its founding, in 1920, the club became a charter member of the South Carolina Federation of Music Clubs, connecting Sumter’s musicians and music lovers to a larger statewide network.
Nearly ninety years later, in 2009–2010, the membership voted to disaffiliate from the National Federation of Music Clubs, including the South Carolina Federation. This thoughtful decision allowed the club to keep its focus and its funds close to home, dedicating all donations directly to local scholarships and community music initiatives.
The earliest known Constitution of the club, dated 1940–41, captures the organization’s enduring purpose: “to study music, and to instill a love of good music among its members and all with whom they may associate.” More than eight decades later, that mission continues to guide every performance, meeting, and scholarship award.
Membership in the early days fell into two categories; Active and Associate with an Honorary designation added later. During the World War II era, when Shaw Air Force Base was known as Shaw Field, military wives stationed there were welcomed as Temporary members. Today, those connected to Shaw are considered full and valued members of the club, continuing a long tradition of inclusion and friendship.
The Woman’s Afternoon Music Club proudly presents two signature annual events: the Festival of Choirs and the Afternoon of Special Music. In addition, the club supports the next generation of musicians through three prestigious, competition-based scholarships: the Clifton Moise (instrumental), Elizabeth Book (vocal), and Sheldon Timmerman (piano) awards and are open to Sumter County high school juniors and seniors.
Through more than a century of change, one thing has remained constant: the club’s unwavering commitment to nurturing a love of music and celebrating the talents that make the Sumter community sing.
Becoming a member of the Woman’s Afternoon Music Club means joining a vibrant community of musicians, educators, and music lovers who believe in the power of live performance. Together, we celebrate the shared joy of making and experiencing music whether through recitals, community events, or our long-standing support of local students and scholarships.
